Black History Month (also known as African-American History Month), is an annual celebration that began as a way of remembering important figures and events in the history of African diaspora.

The first celebration took place at Kent State in 1970. Black History Month is currently celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in places like the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Ireland, it is observed in the month of October.

BHM is a time to commemorate African American trailblazers and their remarkable legacies, a time to celebrate amazing people that truly believed in freedom, humanity, and who did everything in their power to make a positive change.

In honor of Black History Month, we’ve rounded up a list of inspirational quotes from civil rights icons and abolitionists including Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. Below, you’ll also find wise words and provoking ideas from other inspiring leaders and modern figures.

Here are 175 Black History Month quotes that celebrate freedom, change and humanity:

Black History Month quotes

There are so many amazing people along the history that made huge efforts in order to end slavery, to earn rights and freedom for themselves and others. Many atrocities happened in the past, but Black History Month is about celebrating those who had the courage to fight against injustice and make this world a better and safer place.

Here are our top Black History Month quotes from famous figures and speeches that you should know:

MAYA ANGELOU

It’s important for us to also understand that the phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’ simply refers to the notion that there’s a specific vulnerability for African Americans that needs to be addressed. Morgan Freeman Black History Month quotes

Morgan Freeman stirred a lot of controversy back in 2005 when he called the Black History Month “ridiculous”. The idea behind his statement was that black people don’t need a separate history celebration since all of it is part of American History. 25 Great Immanuel Kant Quotes on Pure Reason and Morality

Immanuel Kant (22 April, 1724 – 12 February, 1804) was a great German philosopher of the Enlightenment Era. His most popular work is the Critique of Pure Reason . Before becoming a full professor at the University of Konigsberg he worked as a tutor while exploring the middle ground between rationalism and empiricism . Kant argues that humans only believe in the things that are sure to exist; things we’ve seen or touched. In reality, there are many other things out there that remain unknown to us yet, but that doesn’t make them less real. Kant focused on ethics and morals and the way they affect our reasoning . He proposed a moral law called the “categorical imperative” -- an unconditional obligation often known as the principle of universalizability. According to it, one cannot make exceptions for oneself if one claims to be moral. Once we accept a wrongdoing by blaming circumstances, we make it a universally acceptable act. We aren't all philosophers, but we can...
